How to Master Sales: Expert Tips from a Spectrum Business Account Executive
Success in direct sales isn't just about personality; it's about habits and relationships. At Spectrum Business, this means engaging with local small and medium-sized business owners to understand their connectivity needs. Spectrum Business Senior Account Executive Luke Nuttle has learned how to succeed by trusting the process, following through and staying adaptable. He is sharing more on what he’s discovered throughout his career below.
Trust the Process
In sales, strategy drives results. And results come from learning a proven process and putting it into practice, asking the right questions and understanding what matters most to each business owner.
As Luke explains, selling Spectrum products and services to a business is a very specific type of sale, and there are just a few key reasons a customer may or may not buy. Once you understand what those reasons might be, and follow the process you learned during training, you uncover every business’ ‘why’ and can offer the right solution. Over time, practice builds confidence, and those conversations start to feel more natural.
Follow-Through Builds Credibility
In direct sales, making the first connection is only part of the job. What sets strong account executives apart is what happens after that first conversation.
Following through means doing what you say you’ll do — especially when it comes to helping a Spectrum Business customer. Whether that’s checking back in, delivering information, answering questions or reconnecting when the timing is right. Business owners are busy, and trust grows when they know they can count on you to be reliable, prepared and responsive.
Luke has learned that follow-through can make all the difference. A conversation may not lead to an immediate sale, but staying true to your word and maintaining the relationship can open the door later. In one case, a prospective business owner told him to come back in three years after signing up with another internet/phone provider. Luke returned, years later, and reminded the business owner of their conversation, then made the sale. In another case, a return visit to a previously unresponsive owner of an electronics store led to a connection with a developer that led to a relationship that helped Luke secure more than 20 future locations. In direct sales, every commitment kept is a chance to build credibility and create future opportunities.
Adaptability Creates Opportunity
No two business owners are the same, and no two conversations go exactly alike. That’s why adaptability is such an important trait to have when working in sales.
Being adaptable means adjusting your approach based on the customer, the business and the moment. One owner may want to get straight to pricing, while another may need more time to talk through their challenges and goals. The ability to listen, read the situation and respond with the right solution helps account executives build stronger connections and move conversations forward more effectively.
For Luke, adaptability is part of what makes long-term success possible. When you stay open, keep learning and tailor your approach, you’re better equipped to meet customers where they are, help them find the solutions that fit their needs and build relationships that lead to referrals, momentum and long-term success.
Building a Long and Successful Career
For many people, the rewards of direct sales go beyond what you can earn. The role offers autonomy, flexibility and the chance to build meaningful relationships with local business owners. At its core, this work is about helping businesses grow and supporting the communities they serve.
Success in direct sales isn’t built overnight. It’s built through process, persistence and consistency — one day, one conversation and one relationship at a time.
